Matthew Jeffrey

 
 

Matthew works as a conductor, singer, and singing teacher in and around Exeter and the wider Southwest. In 2018 he was appointed MD of the University of Exeter Singers, the University’s chamber choir. While at the university he was also MD of the University’s Opera Society conducting fully staged student productions of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, alongside several orchestral galas. 

Matthew was appointed Musical Director of Budleigh Salterton Male Voice Choir in 2023, and has since led the choir in a wide range of concerts, collaborations and charity performances.   He also became Musical Director of Exmouth Choral Society in 2023, conducting works including Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Fauré’s Requiem, and Britten’s St Nicolas. In September 2025, he took over as Musical Director of Exeter Bach Choir. 

Alongside his conducting, Matthew is a professional tenor and Lay Vicar at Exeter Cathedral, singing regularly as both a soloist and ensemble singer. Recent solo engagements have included Bach’s B Minor Mass and St John Passion, Handel’s Messiah, Purcell’s Ode on St Cecilia’s Day, and Haydn’s The Creation. He teaches singing at Exeter Cathedral School and Blundell’s School, works as Musical Director of the Choir Church scheme at St Michael’s School, Heavitree, and is the founder and Artistic Director of the Dumnonii Consort, a professional vocal ensemble based in Exeter.
