The choir has over 65 members divided into the usual four sections with approximately equal numbers in each. A section leader is appointed by the members of each section to facilitate communications and to represent them on committee.
The section leaders' other duties include ensuring that any prospective new member is acquainted with what the choir expects from him and that he is helped to feel "at home". New members are invariably seated next to an experienced chorister, who will help to settle him into the routine of rehearsals and help if he experiences difficulties with the music.
The leader also has a pastoral role for the section as a whole, and keeps aware of any unexplained absences and follows them up in case one of his section is ill or is having problems which prevents attendance.
When a new member has shown that he is ready to stage. i.e. he is reasonably sure of both words and music, the leader informs the musical director and, provided the MD agrees, that person is invited to sing in future concerts.
